Candone Wharton

Full Statement

Media:  Ceramic

BFA, University of Georgia, Athens

Candone was born and raised in Central Florida. She attended the University of Georgia where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Upon graduating from college, she went to Europe and settled in Sweden for five years. During this time she taught ceramics in Sweden, and spent one year in Panama as well, teaching primitive ceramics to the Cuna Indians.

In 1977, Candone moved to the Spanish island of Ibiza. It was here that she set up her first studio and began working full-time as a clay artist. Her experience with Raku in college, combined with her admiration of the northern African potters, influenced Candone in creating a style of her own. Her finely crafted, hand-built vessels are uniquely carved with basketweave and block print designs. Each piece has a pinched or slab base with added textured coils and rims to complete the design.

Candone is best known for her intricate work and beautiful luster glazes. By developing a special technique to produce a metallic-like gold luster and combining her forms, textures, and glazes, Candone has brought new meaning to Raku.
